the nightwatchman is the solo project of tom morello, the guitarist best known for his slashing attack in contemporary rock heavyweights rage against the machine and audioslave. morello's solo debut is a far cry from the metallic thunder of his previous output; instead, one man revolution is an album of simple, acoustic folk songs that center on social and political issues. though there's little chance that he'll ever be dubbed "the new bob dylan," morello fares surprisingly well as a message-oriented troubadour, and his indignant, outspoken voice is a welcome one in troubled times.
editorial reviews3 stars out of 5 -- this is straight-up unplugged protest folk the way bob dylan used to do it....the more inspired moments are truly undeniable.
[a] combination of his rich vocals and hook-filled tunes ensures that the heartfelt result rarely seems like a harangue. -- grade: b
